Concise User Guide for DOS/WIN

• €Online documentation: Open the Websurfer browser in Windows, ignore error messages, open local file from the Retrieve menu, and choose any file ending in .HTM inside the IRIZHTML directory. For seeing kanji, set the regular text (or fixed-width text) in the style scheme of the settings menu to a Japanese font.
• €IRIZ Kana-Kanji dictionaries: Once you install one of these in your Japanese system you can input Zen terms, names, etc. and get a choice of pre-war and post-war kanji transcriptions. Most of the dictionaries also contain four-corner numbers for input of single kanji (in VJE use a period before the number).
• €Fast searching: Much of the data contained on the ZenBase CD1 is set up for fgrep searches. By writing some batch files (see the EXAMPLE directory) you can search through many files at once. Example of a batch file for searching all Zen texts, our library database, and the dictionary data:
• fgrep.com -fxcp "%1" c:\Zentexts\*.app c:\Zentexts\*.tab c:\biblio\library.dos c:\zentools\zendics.dat (if you name this batch file search.bat and put it into your ZENTOOLS directory, you can search for ñ„êS by typing search ñ„êS at the command prompt)
• €Searching in context: The Hidemaru editor (in OMAKE) has very interesting grep capabilities.
• €Zen Gaiji: Search the needed character in the lists contained in the Electronic Bodhidharma No. 4, then choose the appropriate font and type the given letter. This works even in English Windows.
• €IRIZ KanjiBase: Refer to the documentation in the IRIZHTML folder. Provided that it is correctly installed, this program should work in any kind of Windows (even in SoftWindows on the Mac). Use our Word macro CEF2BMP for changing codes to bitmap images.
• €Concordance maker: CONCORD sourcefile (an updated CONCORD is available at our WWW site!)
• €Kanji code conversion: (BJ, JB, etc.) BJ thistext.BIG > thistext.SJS
• €Kanji normalization tool (NORMALIZ): NORMALIZ sourcefile (the result will be written to a file with the extension .nor and the normalization report is written to a file with the extension .nml)
• €Electronic text format conversion tool (FMTCNV): FMTCNV sourcefile (you will be asked what format you would like to have, and what name you want the result file to have)
• €Pre-postwar JIS kanji conversion (Old2New, New2Old): OLD2NEW sourcefile (or NEW2OLD sourcefile).
• €Lineage table tool (Hokei): type hokei at the command prompt and follow instructions.
• €Text statistics tools: Tools to count all kanji of a file and list them (CHARCNT), show the percentage that a term occupies within a text (TERMCNT), and produce a list of KanjiBase characters within a text (CHARLIST). Usage for example: CHARCNT sourcefile (the result will be written to a file with the extension .cnt)
